Myths from the comments
People asked good questions under the video. Here are the ideas that went around, and what’s actually true.
“x402 is Crossed out: a new type of Apple wallet that processes Corrected to: a set of open rules for paying pennies instead of pounds.”
Half true. Right that x402 makes payments of a fraction of a penny practical, and right that you still need something people want. But Apple isn’t involved, and x402 isn’t an app or a wallet. It’s an open standard, created at Coinbase and now run through the Linux Foundation, for how a server asks for payment and how software pays. Payments are in USDC, a dollar stablecoin. Nobody installs anything to visit a site: the seller adds x402 to its server and gives a wallet address, and the buyer is software with a funded wallet. The buyer doesn’t confirm each payment either. Its owner sets limits in advance.

“You can charge Crossed out: 0.00001p Corrected to: a tenth of a cent a request.”
False. USDC counts in millionths of a dollar. Its smallest unit, $0.000001, is still bigger than a ten-millionth of a pound, so a price that small can’t be expressed in USDC at all. Cloudflare’s Monetization Gateway sets its minimum higher, at $0.001 a request. Very small prices also run into fees: Coinbase’s facilitator charges sellers $0.001 per settlement after the first 1,000 each month.

“Sites can Crossed out: let agents in free and then charge them to leave Corrected to: name a price up front, and an agent decides whether to pay.”
False. There’s nothing to leave. Each x402 request stands on its own. The server states its price in the 402 response before anything is paid, and the agent decides whether to pay. If it doesn’t, it goes elsewhere and nothing is charged. No money can move without the agent’s signature, which names the exact amount and recipient, and the x402 spec says the facilitator cannot change either.

“They’re going to start charging us for every search.”
Unproven. Nothing in x402 forces anyone to charge, and nothing stops a site charging people: the x402 toolkit includes a paywall page for people paying in a browser. The products launched so far charge machines. Cloudflare’s Monetization Gateway lets a seller charge only verified bots and leave people free, its pay per crawl charges AI crawlers, and Ceramic.ai charges agents per web search. Whether people ever pay per search is a decision for search companies.

“This was announced months ago.”
True, with a catch. x402 itself was announced on 6 May 2025, and Cloudflare’s Agents SDK could pay with it from 23 September 2025. Cloudflare’s Monetization Gateway opened a waitlist on 1 July 2026 and went into closed beta on 30 September 2026. So the protocol was about 17 months old in October 2026, and the Gateway beta was new.

“Crossed out: AI agents outnumber humans Corrected to: Bots send more of the traffic than people do on the internet.”
Unproven. The closest figures measure traffic, not agents. Imperva reported automated traffic at more than 53% of web traffic in 2025, with people at 47%. Cloudflare wrote in July 2026 that more than 50% of internet traffic is now non-human. Both count every kind of bot, from search crawlers to scrapers, and both count requests, not individuals. One crawler can send millions of requests a day. The careful version is: more web traffic now comes from software than from people. We found no source that counts AI agents against the number of people online.

“Only 69,000 agents existed in April 2026, with $50M of total agent spending.”
Unproven. The dollar figure fits. x402scan’s running total of x402 payments across all chains reached about $49.7M by the end of April 2026. We couldn’t trace the 69,000. Counts of wallets, buyers or registrations aren’t counts of agents: one agent can use many wallets, and one wallet can serve many agents. x402scan’s own buyer counts add up per facilitator, so a wallet using two facilitators is counted twice.

“Agents get their money Crossed out: from the blockchain Corrected to: from their owners, who fund a wallet and set limits.”
False. An agent spends money its owner gives it. A person or business buys USDC and puts it in a wallet the agent can use, then sets limits such as a maximum per call and per session. With Coinbase’s Agentic Wallet, for example, you fund the wallet through Coinbase’s onramp, and agents follow the limits but can’t change them. The blockchain is where the payment is recorded, not where the money comes from.

“x402 is just paying with stablecoins.”
True, with a catch. On Base, x402 payments are in USDC, so the money part is a stablecoin transfer. What’s new is the handshake around it: a server states a price inside an ordinary web response, and software can read it, sign a payment for that exact amount and get the resource in the same exchange, with no account, card form or API key. That’s what lets an agent pay a seller it found a minute ago.

“If my site publishes new data, AI agents Crossed out: will pay me for it automatically Corrected to: might pay for it, if it sits behind x402, they can find it and it beats the free options.”
False. Only if you put x402 in front of it and agents find it and decide it’s worth buying. Most paid endpoints get very little use. Coinbase’s Bazaar listed 32,169 x402 resources on 11 October 2026, and the median one had 2 calls in the previous 30 days. Agents pay when the data is fresher, better structured, licensed or quicker than the free alternatives.

“You can let people read for free while AI pays.”
True, with a catch. Cloudflare’s Monetization Gateway lets a seller choose the audience: everyone, or only verified bots, which leaves ordinary visitors free. It works only for bots that identify themselves, and a scraper pretending to be a person needs bot blocking instead. The Gateway is a closed beta for US buyers and sellers only, as of October 2026.

“It’s in closed beta, so you couldn’t be earlier.”
Half true. The Cloudflare Monetization Gateway opened its closed beta on 30 September 2026, so that product is new. x402 itself has been live since May 2025. On Base alone, x402scan counted 41.5 million x402 payments worth $5.66M in the six months to 11 October 2026. It’s early for real commerce, not for the technology.

“Crossed out: Nobody is using x402 yet. Corrected to: Money moves through x402, but most of it isn’t ordinary buying yet.”
Half true. Money does move: $5.66M of USDC on Base in the six months to 11 October 2026, by x402scan’s count. But most of it isn’t ordinary buying. A third went round a closed loop between the same wallets, and only about 27% (49% at most) looked like sellers being paid by many different buyers. One BlockRun wallet made 26.7M of the 41.5M payments.

“Tens of millions of x402 payments Crossed out: prove it’s booming Corrected to: mostly measure automation.”
False. Payment counts mostly measure automation. In the six months to 11 October 2026, one BlockRun wallet made 26.7M of Base’s 41.5M x402 payments, and five gateways made 79% of the payments but only 9% of the dollars. Over the same months, monthly dollars on Base fell from $1.93M in April to $0.57M in September. Look at dollars, distinct buyers and repeat buyers instead.

“x402 carries more than 90% of agent payments, so it has won.”
True, with a catch. Coinbase’s Q2 2026 results deck, using Artemis data, put x402’s share of onchain agentic transactions, and Base’s share of agentic stablecoin volume, above 90% each. Artemis identifies agentic transactions partly by their HTTP 402 interactions, which makes a high x402 share close to true by definition. The figures also cover only onchain payments, leaving out card payments, where rivals such as Stripe’s MPP and card-based agent payments compete.

“x402 handles $24M of payments a month.”
Unproven. That figure comes from the x402.org home page, which still showed 75.41M payments and $24.24M under “Last 30 Days” on 14 October 2026. Researchers found it stamped 25 August. x402scan counted about $1.06M across all the chains it covers in the 30 days to 11 October. The two can’t be reconciled, so don’t use the x402.org figure without a date and a method.

“Solana Crossed out: has overtaken Corrected to: briefly passed Base Crossed out: for x402 Corrected to: on x402 payment counts, and Base led on dollars.”
Half true. On payment counts, for a few weeks. Solana passed Base on daily x402 payments on 25 August 2026, and Artemis data put it at 76% of payments in the four weeks to 22 September. On x402scan the swing lasted from 20 August to 8 September, and researchers traced most of it to one gateway’s traffic moving chain. On dollars, Base led: 66% of Base and Solana dollars in the 30 days to 11 October.

“OpenAI Crossed out: has adopted x402 Corrected to: has no x402 product.”
False. OpenAI has no x402 product. Its cookbook has an example with AWS that pays an approved x402 merchant on Base Sepolia, a test network, and by default it runs as a local simulation. In September 2026 the OpenAI Agents SDK maintainers closed a request for built-in x402 support, saying they had decided against built-in payment tooling.

“Cloudflare now lets agents pay on their own.”
Half true. Cloudflare’s Monetization Gateway is the seller side: it lets sites charge agents. The agent wallet, Cloudflare Wallets, was announced in August 2026, but its docs say a reserved handle can’t yet send, receive or hold funds. Cloudflare’s Agents SDK has been able to pay with x402 since September 2025, as long as the developer gives the agent a funded wallet from another provider.

“x402 is Coinbase’s protocol.”
True, with a catch. It was created at Coinbase, and Coinbase still runs the facilitator that handles most Base x402 payments. In 2026, though, Coinbase contributed it to the x402 Foundation at the Linux Foundation. Technical decisions sit with a committee that has seats for Coinbase, Cloudflare and Stripe, and the code is open source.

“Crossed out: Anyone Corrected to: Only US sellers let into a closed beta can start charging agents through Cloudflare today.”
False. The Monetization Gateway is a closed beta, and buyers and sellers must both be based in the US. Sellers also need a card on file, a verified email, a Cloudflare account older than 60 days and a site proxied through Cloudflare that is older than 30 days. Cloudflare has given no date for other regions. x402 itself is open, so there are other ways to accept it.
