Myths from the comments
7 minutes. Checked 14 October.
In this lesson
- Apple isn’t involved. x402 is open rules, made at Coinbase.
- An agent sees the price first. Nothing is paid without its signature for that exact amount.
- Over half of web traffic comes from software. That counts requests, not agents.
- x402 is from May 2025. What was new in the video was Cloudflare’s beta.
Myths from the comments
Some of the best learning happened in the comments, including some confident claims that were half right. This lesson takes five of them one at a time and says what’s true, what isn’t, and how we know.
The second most-liked comment under the video explained x402 as “a new type of Apple wallet, accept it processes pennys instead of pounds.” It got the big idea right and several details wrong, which is true of most of the claims below. Each one comes from the comments. Each answer says what’s true, what isn’t and how we know.
“It’s a new type of Apple wallet”
Myth. “x402 will still require the wallet system to be downloaded and installed by all party’s in order for the process to work.”
“It’s a new type of Apple wallet”
Half true. The commenter was right that x402 makes payments of a fraction of a penny practical, and right that you still need something people want. Four details are off:
- Apple isn’t involved. x402 is an open standard, created at Coinbase and now run through the Linux Foundation: a set of rules for how a server asks for payment and how software pays.
- It isn’t pounds or pennies. Payments are in USDC, a stablecoin redeemable one for one for US dollars.
“It’s a new type of Apple wallet”
- Nobody installs anything to visit a site. The seller adds x402 to its server, or switches it on in a service such as Cloudflare’s gateway, and gives a wallet address to be paid into. The buyer is software with a funded wallet.
- The buyer doesn’t confirm each payment. The owner sets limits in advance and the agent pays inside them, as lesson 3 shows.
“It’s a new type of Apple wallet”
The comment also imagined charging 0.00001p a request. USDC counts in millionths of a dollar, and its smallest unit is still bigger than a ten-millionth of a pound, so that price can’t be charged in USDC at all. Cloudflare’s gateway sets its floor higher, at $0.001 (14 Oct) source.
Right.
Not quite.
Both count automated traffic of all kinds, from search crawlers to scrapers, and they count traffic, not individuals.
“Allow free entry, charge to leave”
Myth. “Allow free entry, charge to leave. What’s a trapped agent going to do?”
False. A reply in the thread put it exactly: there’s nothing to leave. Each request stands on its own. The server states its price in the 402, before anything is paid. The agent decides. If it doesn’t pay, it goes elsewhere and nothing has been charged.
“Allow free entry, charge to leave”
Nothing can be taken without the agent’s signature either, and the signature names the exact amount and the recipient. The x402 spec says the facilitator “cannot modify the amount or destination.” A server has no exit to charge for and no signature for a different amount.
“They’ll charge us for every search”
Myth. “So they’re going to start charging us for every single search or data request.”
“They’ll charge us for every search”
Unproven. Nothing in x402 forces anyone to charge, and nothing stops a site charging people either: the x402 toolkit includes a paywall page for people paying in a browser. What the products launched so far do is charge machines. Cloudflare’s Monetization Gateway lets a seller charge only verified bots and leave people free. Its pay per crawl charges AI crawlers. Ceramic.ai, one of the gateway’s first sellers, charges agents per web search. Whether people ever pay per search is a decision for search companies, and x402 doesn’t make it for them.
Right.
Not quite.
The price comes before any payment, and nothing moves without the agent’s signature for that exact amount.
“This was announced months ago”
Myth. “This was announced months ago.”
True, but. Both sides of that thread were right about different things:
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| 6 May 2025 | x402 announced |
| 23 September 2025 | Cloudflare’s Agents SDK can pay with x402 |
“This was announced months ago”
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| 1 July 2026 | Cloudflare opens a waitlist for the Monetization Gateway |
| 30 September 2026 | Monetization Gateway closed beta opens, the day before the video |
The protocol was about 17 months old when the video went up. The Gateway beta was new that week.
“AI agents outnumber humans online”
Myth. “AI agents currently outnumber humans on the internet.” And the reply: “AI agents do not outnumber humans on the internet.”
Unproven, and both sides were loose. These are the closest real figures:
- Imperva, a bot-security company, reported in April 2026 that automated traffic made up more than 53% of all web traffic in 2025, with people at 47%.
- Cloudflare wrote in July 2026 that “more than 50% of traffic on the Internet is now non-human.”
“AI agents outnumber humans online”
Both count all automated traffic: search engine crawlers, scrapers, uptime checkers, spam bots and AI agents together. And both count traffic, not individuals. One crawler can send millions of requests a day, so “most traffic comes from machines” says nothing about how many AI agents there are compared with people.
“AI agents outnumber humans online”
Fact. The careful version: more web traffic now comes from software than from people. We found no source that counts AI agents and compares them with the number of people online.
A reply that said only “Yet” got 52 likes, and it may turn out right. Another commenter countered that only 69,000 agents existed in April 2026. We couldn’t trace that number, and a count of wallets or registrations isn’t a count of agents either.
More claims, including some that came up in the research rather than the comments, are on the myths page, each with its sources.
Right.
Not quite.
x402 was announced in May 2025. The Cloudflare Monetization Gateway beta, which the video covered, opened on 30 September 2026.
