How to accept x402 today
9 minutes. Checked 14 October.
In this lesson
- Every x402 sale needs a server that asks for payment, a wallet that receives it and a facilitator.
- In October 2026, the route open to UK sellers is the x402 package on your own server with a facilitator.
- Test free on a test network first, and keep the wallet that receives payments apart from your savings.
How to accept x402 today
Cloudflare’s new Monetization Gateway is the product the video was about, and it is US-only for now. This lesson walks through every route that works today, what each costs, and the one to use if you are in the UK.
Every x402 sale needs the same parts: a server that answers with a 402 and a price, a wallet address that receives the money, and a facilitator that checks each payment and settles it on the blockchain. The routes below differ in who runs which part.
All of this was checked on 2026-10-14. It changes quickly, so check the linked pages before you commit.
Route 1: Cloudflare Monetization Gateway
If your site already runs through Cloudflare, the Gateway puts the 402 in front of it for you. You set it up in the dashboard: pick the domain, the receiving wallet and the URL to charge for, then choose a fixed price or a variable one (the agent authorises a maximum and you report what it used). Cloudflare strongly recommends that your own server also checks each payment, which takes a little code. You can charge all traffic or only verified bots, so people can still read free. The minimum price is $0.001 (14 Oct) source a request. Payments settle in USDC on Base through Coinbase’s facilitator (14 Oct) source, and Cloudflare has published no fee of its own (14 Oct) source.
Route 1: Cloudflare Monetization Gateway
It opened as a closed beta on 2026-09-30. The early users Cloudflare named are its own AI Gateway, Ceramic.ai, Stocktwits and API2PDF, with no volumes published.
Who can join: buyers and sellers must both be based in the United States (14 Oct) source. A seller also needs to:
- accept Cloudflare’s terms for the service,
- keep a credit card on file and verify the account email,
Route 1: Cloudflare Monetization Gateway
- have an account older than 60 days and a site that has been on Cloudflare for more than 30 days (14 Oct) source, with the site proxied through Cloudflare,
- pass Cloudflare’s security checks on the account and the zone.
You apply in the dashboard, under Monetize, or by emailing x402@cloudflare.com. Cloudflare says other countries are “on the way” and gives no date. If you are in the UK, this route is closed for now.
Route 2: Coinbase’s facilitator
Coinbase runs the facilitator that settles most x402 payments on Base, 91% of transactions in the six months to 2026-10-11. Cloudflare’s Gateway and Stripe’s x402 integration both settle through it.
What it costs: nothing for the first 1,000 settlements each month and $0.001 for each one after that (14 Oct) source. Checking a payment is free (14 Oct) source, and only successful settlements count. Coinbase charges no processor or chargeback fees. Every payment is screened against US sanctions lists and other risk signals before it settles, and flagged payments are declined.
Right.
Not quite.
The Gateway and Coinbase Business are limited to the US (Coinbase Business also takes Singapore), and Stripe’s list of countries for stablecoin payments does not include the UK. Your own server with Coinbase’s facilitator has no country rule in Coinbase’s published terms beyond sanctions.
Route 2: Coinbase’s facilitator
What you need: a Coinbase Developer Platform (CDP) account and an API key. Your server sends the key with each request to the facilitator. With the official x402 packages, that is a few lines:
import { createFacilitatorConfig } from "@coinbase/x402";
import { HTTPFacilitatorClient } from "@x402/core/server";
const facilitator = new HTTPFacilitatorClient(
createFacilitatorConfig(process.env.CDP_API_KEY_ID, process.env.CDP_API_KEY_SECRET),
);Route 2: Coinbase’s facilitator
We checked that this builds with @coinbase/x402 2.1.0 and @x402/core 2.28.0. We did not call Coinbase’s live service, because that needs a real account.
Can you use it outside the US? Coinbase’s x402 pages give no country rule. Its developer terms, last modified 2026-06-23 (14 Oct) source, bar people and businesses in sanctioned places such as Iran, Cuba, North Korea and Syria, and they do not limit the developer platform to the US. Nothing we found stops a UK developer, but Coinbase does not say so in plain words, so read the terms when you sign up.
Route 2: Coinbase’s facilitator
Do not confuse this with Coinbase Business, which since July 2026 also lets companies accept agent payments over x402. Coinbase Business is open only to corporations and LLCs based in the US or Singapore (14 Oct) source.
Route 3: x402 middleware on your own server
This is the route lesson 5 walks through. You add the official x402 package to your own web server, list which addresses cost money, and the package does the rest: it answers with a 402, has a facilitator check the signed payment, runs your code, and settles the payment once your code has answered without an error. The current release is 2.28.0, from 2026-09-29 (14 Oct) source, with packages for Express, Hono, Next.js and Fastify in TypeScript, plus Python and Go (14 Oct) source.
Route 3: x402 middleware on your own server
The money goes straight to your wallet address. No platform sits in the middle, and your server holds only the address, never the key that spends from it.
Route 3: x402 middleware on your own server
Before you pick a facilitator, you can ask it what it supports. Here is the free test facilitator answering on 2026-10-14:
The x402.org test facilitator, captured 14 October 2026 and shortened. eip155:84532 is Base Sepolia, the free test network. This facilitator is for testing only and must not be used for real payments.

Right.
Not quite.
Checking a payment is free, and only successful settlements count. There are no processor or chargeback fees.
Route 4: Other facilitators and hosted platforms
The x402 docs list 15 facilitators (14 Oct) source. Those with a “production-grade” label are Corbits, PayAI, Polygon and T54 XRPL (14 Oct) source. Prices vary. On Base, PayAI charges about $0.0023 (14 Oct) source a payment, thirdweb takes 0.3% (14 Oct) source, and some, such as Dexter, are free.
Pick one with a public track record. The research found that several facilitators listed in 2025 are now dead or idle: AurraCloud and CodeNut no longer answer, Relai stopped responding, and Mogami has had no new code since May 2026. The official packages accept a list of facilitators, so you can name a backup.
Route 4: Other facilitators and hosted platforms
Two hosted options handle more for you, with limits:
- Bankr x402 Cloud hosts a paid endpoint for you. You write a small handler, or describe the endpoint to Bankr’s chat agent and it writes and deploys one. The first 1,000 settled requests each month are free, then Bankr takes 5% (14 Oct) source. The research found no usage figures to show anyone pays through it.
Route 4: Other facilitators and hosted platforms
- Stripe accepts x402 for USDC on Base only (14 Oct) source and pays the money into your Stripe balance in your own currency, with refunds through Stripe. Stablecoin payments are open to US businesses outside New York (14 Oct) source. Elsewhere it is a private preview in the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Liechtenstein, Gibraltar, Hong Kong and Mexico (14 Oct) source. The UK is not on Stripe’s list.
The route for a UK seller
- Build and test for free on Base Sepolia with the x402.org test facilitator (lesson 5).
- Set up a wallet you control that can receive USDC on Base. Write its recovery phrase down and keep it offline. Your server needs only the address.
- Create a Coinbase Developer Platform account and an API key, and read the terms as you sign up.
- Switch your server to Base (
eip155:8453) and to Coinbase’s facilitator. Prices written in dollars use Base USDC automatically.
The route for a UK seller
- Before the first real payment, decide how you will record income for HMRC and turn USDC into pounds (lesson 6).
Careful. Keep the wallet that receives payments separate from any wallet you trade with or hold savings in. It makes your records simpler, and a mistake on the server cannot touch your other money.
Right.
Not quite.
Settled exact and upto payments cannot be reversed. Coinbase’s advice is to send a transfer back to the payer’s address.
Lesson done.

Price: about 9 minutes of your attention.
You can now say
- Every x402 sale needs a server that asks for payment, a wallet that receives it and a facilitator.
- In October 2026, the route open to UK sellers is the x402 package on your own server with a facilitator.
- Test free on a test network first, and keep the wallet that receives payments apart from your savings.
