No code, and Shopify

7 minutes. Checked 14 October.

In this lesson

  • As of October 2026, Shopify has no x402 option. Its agent checkout uses normal payment methods.
  • To keep a page free for people, offer agents a cleaner paid version at a separate address.
  • Without code you can still prepare: collect clean data and find a business that would buy it.

No code, and Shopify

Several viewers asked how to set this up on Shopify, or without writing code. The short answer is that you can’t add x402 to Shopify today. This lesson explains what Shopify offers agents instead, and which no-code routes exist.

“How to set it up on Shopify?” was one of the questions under the video. Here is the straight answer.

Shopify

You cannot add x402 to a Shopify store today. We found no x402 setting, app or announcement from Shopify (14 Oct) source. Shopify is one of 19 (14 Oct) source Premier members of the x402 Foundation, the body that looks after the protocol. Membership shows interest, but Shopify has shipped nothing for x402 that a merchant can switch on.

Shopify

Shopify does have its own route for AI agents. On 2026-09-28 it opened checkout to agents that work inside a shopper’s browser, for all eligible Shopify merchants. The agent can look at a checkout, change the delivery address or option, and place the order once the shopper approves. Payment goes through methods such as Shop Pay, and it runs on the Universal Commerce Protocol, which Shopify uses for agent shopping. x402 is not involved.

Shopify

That fits how a shop works. A shop sells to people, and an agent buying a jumper is spending its owner’s money through a normal checkout. x402 suits a different sale: an agent paying a few cents for one request, such as a reading, a score or a file, with no basket and no account.

Someone asks how to add x402 to their Shopify store. What is the accurate answer as of October 2026?

Your choice is checked as soon as you pick it. With a keyboard, move with the arrow keys and press Space to choose.

Right.

Not quite.

Shopify’s agent checkout, launched on 2026-09-28, runs on its Universal Commerce Protocol with payment methods such as Shop Pay. We found no x402 option from Shopify.

Shopify

Myth. “Shopify takes USDC, so it already does x402.” In June 2025 Shopify, Coinbase and Stripe announced that merchants could accept USDC on Base. That is a way for a customer to pay at a normal checkout. The announcement does not mention x402 or AI agents.

If you run a Shopify store: check whether you are eligible for Shopify’s agent checkout, which is the agent-ready step that exists today. If you also have data or a tool worth selling per request, that would live on a separate service, not inside the store.

What you can do without code

In the US, with an eligible Cloudflare account: the Monetization Gateway is set up in Cloudflare’s dashboard. You choose the address to charge for, the receiving wallet and the price, and you can charge only verified bots so that people still read free. Cloudflare strongly recommends that your own server also checks each payment, and that part takes a little code. It is in closed beta (14 Oct) source, and buyers and sellers must both be based in the United States (14 Oct) source. Lesson 3 lists the full requirements.

What you can do without code

Charging AI crawlers, without x402: Cloudflare has two other products for site owners, and neither uses x402.

  • Pay per crawl (closed beta (14 Oct) source since July 2025) answers AI crawlers with a price. Cloudflare acts as the merchant, collects the money and pays you. You apply through a sign-up form.

What you can do without code

  • Pay Per Use (beta (14 Oct) source since 2026-09-30) lets AI companies make offers for specific uses of your content. You accept or decline each one, and Cloudflare pays you monthly. During the beta Cloudflare works directly with the publishers who opt in.

Neither page says which countries can join, so ask Cloudflare. These are the closest answers today to the comment “can you charge the bots that crawl your site?”

What you can do without code

Hosted x402 endpoints: Bankr’s x402 Cloud lets you describe a paid endpoint to its chat agent, which writes and deploys it on Base. The first 1,000 settled requests each month are free, then Bankr takes 5% (14 Oct) source. Your endpoint and your money then depend on one company, and the research found no usage figures to show that anyone pays through it.

With a little help: the test server in lesson 5 is 47 lines that you copy and paste. A coding assistant, or a friend who codes, can take you through it.

You want people to read your guide free while AI agents pay. Which option does that from a dashboard, and for whom?

Your choice is checked as soon as you pick it. With a keyboard, move with the arrow keys and press Space to choose.

Right.

Not quite.

The Gateway lets you charge all traffic or only verified bots. It is set up in Cloudflare’s dashboard, but only US sellers and buyers can use it for now.

Humans free, agents pay

One viewer asked: “could I make it so real humans can get the data for free but AI has to pay a tiny fee?” Yes, in two ways.

  1. Let Cloudflare tell them apart. The Gateway can charge verified bots only. It is set up in a dashboard, but for now it is US-only.

Humans free, agents pay

  1. Offer agents a better version. Keep your web page free for people. Put the same information, cleaned and structured, at a separate address that costs money. An agent that wants the clean version pays for it.

The second way leaves a gap: an agent can still read your free page. It pays only if the paid version saves it work, by being cleaner, fresher or complete where the page is patchy. Lesson 1’s test applies here too.

What is not possible yet

As of 2026-10-14:

  • adding x402 to Shopify;
  • using Cloudflare’s Monetization Gateway from outside the US;
  • for a UK business, having a payments company take x402 payments for you and pay you out. Stripe does this in your own currency, and Coinbase Business holds the USDC and pays out to a bank, but neither serves UK businesses for it today;
  • an x402 plugin for another site builder that we can recommend. Third-party plugins turn up in searches, but we have not reviewed them, and anything that handles payments needs checking before you trust it.

What to do now

You can prepare without code, and none of it is wasted if you never use x402.

  • Run your idea through the tester in lesson 1 and fix what scores zero.
  • Collect your data in a consistent shape, such as a spreadsheet with a place, a time and a unit on every row. That clean set is the product.
  • Talk to one business whose agent might buy it.
  • If you are in the US and might use the Gateway, move your site to Cloudflare early. Its current rules need an account older than 60 days and a site that has been on Cloudflare for more than 30 days (14 Oct) source.
Why is a separate paid feed for agents not a perfect wall?

Your choice is checked as soon as you pick it. With a keyboard, move with the arrow keys and press Space to choose.

Right.

Not quite.

Without bot detection in front of the free page, nothing stops an agent reading it. The paid version earns its price by being cleaner, fresher or more complete.

Lesson done.

Price: about 7 minutes of your attention.
