Builders on Base

8 minutes. Checked 14 October.

In this lesson

  • The biggest x402 numbers often come from one wallet or a contest, not from many customers.
  • Serious builders ship steadily and have buyers who pay for something real.
  • Many projects joined x402 with a token and went quiet when the trend moved on.
Go through it step by step

Builders on Base

Ask which x402 projects on Base are serious and most lists will show you transaction counts. This lesson sorts the builders by what they ship and who actually pays them, and shows why the biggest numbers often belong to the least serious names.

Here is what four of the busiest x402 names on Base were doing in the six months to 11 October 2026.

  • BlockRun took about 27 million payments. One wallet made 26.7 million of them.
  • claw402 took 4.87 million payments worth $9,500 in total. Between 25 and 40 wallets were polling its $0.002 endpoints all day.

Builders on Base

  • Vishwa was paid by a fixed fleet of about 300 wallets, every day for months, at $0.001 or $0.01.
  • AX1 sold one $0.02 route. AX1’s own post says each payment was an entry into a weekly rewards contest.

With AIsa, whose big numbers came in late 2025, these gateways supplied 79% of Base x402 transactions in that window and 9% of the dollars, according to x402scan. Transaction counts mostly measure automation. To rate a project, the researchers looked instead at what it ships and who actually pays it.

How the ratings work

Every project in the research got labels as of 11 October 2026. These are the researchers’ judgements, with the evidence in each profile.

  • Seriousness: Serious builder, Credible but small, Speculative or Likely abandoned.
  • Momentum: Accelerating, Steady, Slowing, Stalled or Dead.
  • Trend-hopping, scored 1 to 5. A 1 is a long-running focus where x402 is a natural next step. A 5 is narrative only, with no real product behind the name.

The ones worth watching

The research names six builders to watch closely. Each is serious, and each comes with a catch.

Project Why it rates as serious The catch
BlockRun Ships releases most days; named founder, formerly head of data science at Circle One wallet made most of its volume; organic receipts were about $100 a day

The ones worth watching

Project Why it rates as serious The catch
PayAI 17 months of steady shipping; on 13 September 2026 it withdrew its own market-share claims for lacking a dated denominator Its Base business has largely gone; it now centres on Solana
BlockRun’s Base address took about 27 million x402 payments in six months. How does the research read that number?

Your choice is checked as soon as you pick it. With a keyboard, move with the arrow keys and press Space to choose.

Right.

Not quite.

One Base wallet made 26.7M of BlockRun’s payments, about 64% of all Base x402 transactions in the window. Organic receipts were about $100 a day. The money was real, and it came mostly from one payer.

The ones worth watching

Olas Same thesis since 2021, a doxxed team, the deepest engineering in the group Its agents use x402 mostly to buy for themselves
Bankr The only app selling x402 as a priced product (x402 Cloud) No usage or revenue figures; its traffic doesn’t show on x402scan

The ones worth watching

Virtuals Protocol Best resourced, with a protocol revenue line Its x402 volume fell about 99% after April 2026
Merit Systems Builds x402scan, the source of most numbers here Deleted several x402scan features in August 2026

Serious companies using x402 as a side door

Some established companies have added x402 without depending on it. Venice, a private AI app, raised a $65M Series A in July 2026 and lets wallets top up over x402; that door had brought in $5,279 in total. Crossmint lets its agent wallets pay x402 endpoints as one rail beside cards. thirdweb sells a hosted facilitator, but the engineer who led its x402 work now commits to a different company.

Read these as a sign of how x402 may spread, as one payment option inside products that already make money. Their x402 numbers say little about their health.

Small and real

A few smaller projects show the kind of use x402 was built for. Laso Finance, a US money-services business, sells prepaid cards and gift cards to agents; its Base orders of $5 to $30 from more than 50 wallets were the most organic mix the researchers found. Daydreams runs Task Market, where 385 tasks had been completed by 11 October 2026, each paying 2 to 4 USDC. Both are tiny, and both do what they say.

The trend-hoppers

The research found one arc repeating. A project joins the current theme and ships something real for a quarter. Then it issues or promotes a token, and goes quiet when the theme moves.

On the research’s trend-hopping scale, what does a score of 5 mean?

Your choice is checked as soon as you pick it. With a keyboard, move with the arrow keys and press Space to choose.

Right.

Not quite.

1 means a long-running focus where x402 is a natural extension; 3 means several pivots with a real product each time; 5 means narrative only. PING and the mint copies score 5.

The trend-hoppers

Questflow changed its headline about every six months and dropped its x402 facilitator about three months after launching it. Heurist has pivoted at least six times since 2023. Cluster Protocol launched a token in the same quarter as its x402 gateway; its token disclosure counted x402 payers as eligible for the airdrop, and payments stopped on 2 October 2026. AX1, Cluster, Meridian, Questflow and Heurist each score 4 out of 5 for trend-hopping. Among 63 token projects profiled, 24 score 4 or 5.

The mint rush, and who has stopped

On 22 October 2025 a token called PING received 97.2% of all Base x402 transactions that day. People paid 1 USDC through x402 to mint it, and copies followed within days. Seven mint contracts took in about $603,000 of USDC. About 75% of it was withdrawn by admin or owner accounts within 3 to 27 days of each contract going live, according to the on-chain records the researchers traced. A withdrawal doesn’t prove wrongdoing, and no refunds were found.

The mint rush, and who has stopped

Others stopped for less dramatic reasons. ATXP, which raised a $19.2M seed, took its last Base payment on 18 June 2026 and now leads with an AI model. AnySpend stopped on 17 August, Relai on 8 July. The founder of elizaOS declared its token dead on 5 August 2026.

A list is not usage

The official x402 directory had 206 entries when it was taken down on 7 July 2026. The researchers found that 116 of them showed no Base activity at all. CoinGecko’s “x402 Ecosystem” category held 135 tokens, 62 of them on Base, and 37 of those 62 had no matching x402 footprint.

Careful. Names such as Giza, Theoriq, Recall, Spectral, Wayfinder, Clanker and Cookie DAO appear on x402 lists. The researchers found no x402 footprint for any of them on Base.

Use the directory

For scale, every x402 payment on Base over the last 30 days added up to $702K (11 Oct) source, according to x402scan. The players directory lists 86 entries with their ratings, their people, their funding and their live activity: recent releases, commits and Base payments. Start with a project’s opinion line, then open its full research profile.

A token sits in CoinGecko’s ‘x402 Ecosystem’ category. What does that tell you on its own?

Your choice is checked as soon as you pick it. With a keyboard, move with the arrow keys and press Space to choose.

Right.

Not quite.

The category is a label anyone can end up with. The researchers checked the 62 tokens with a Base contract and found no matching x402 footprint for 37 of them.
